Brighton Montessori: Nursery 1 Programme
Learning From their Surroundings
Brighton Montessori is a quality nursery school in Singapore, providing personalized learning for all children under our care. Our Nursery 1 curriculum is heavily focused on hands-on experiences and uniquely designed to cater to each child’s interests. Specialized materials are used to help children in Nursery 1 focus on the skill set being acquired. At 3-4 years old, children become more conscious of their surroundings and are keen to explore and learn from their environment.
Our purposefully structured Montessori environment has intriguing materials within reach of children, motivating them to explore, interact and learn independently. Teachers are trained observers and facilitators who closely guide children in selecting the specialized apparatus that enhances their learning.

Why Should You Enroll Your Child into a Montessori Nursery 1 Programme in Singapore?
The Montessori approach highly values a child’s individuality and provides opportunities for children to acquire self-help skills that enable them to become independent learners.
Each child is directed on their own path to maximize their potential. Our Montessori Nursery School Programme strikes a balance in both individual and group activities, that enable children to experience one-on-one teaching as well as group learning.
Our weekly programme covers the five pillars of Montessori. Brighton Montessori also provides holistic experiences with Music and Movement, Outdoor activities and Art and Craft throughout the week.

Teacher-to-Child Ratio

Personalized Attention & Guidance
Our Nursery 1 classes have a teacher-to-child ratio of 1:8, which is lower than industry regulations in Singapore (1 + 1 para-educators/educarers: 20). Each teacher is trained in the Montessori method, and the centre is also supported by an Academic Coordinator. Children are naturally curious about everything at this age and require a higher level of attention. Therefore, a low teacher-to-child ratio allows our teachers to monitor your child’s development closely and lets them know each child on a deep and personal level. Teachers can also better develop personalized goals and learning objectives for each student.
Our Curriculum: The Montessori Approach
At Brighton Montessori, our Nursery 1 Programme covers the whole spectrum of Montessori training with the five pillars of Montessori. The five pillars are Practical Life Skills, Sensorial Exercises, Language, Mathematics, and Culture Studies. Our educators encourage learning through hands-on activities in creative and fun ways. Our children are also exposed to other subjects to develop all-rounded abilities in preparation for formal schooling.

Phonics

Sandpaper Letters to help children practice writing using their fingers through tracing while associating the letter with the sound.
Phonic Cards and Sound-Sheets are used to reinforce what has been taught. Children lay a strong foundation for writing through Metal Insets for Design.
Enhance children’s use of language in relevant contexts through activities such as storytelling, fingerplays, nursery rhymes and group lessons.

Math

Both concrete and abstract materials are introduced to children in Nursery 1 to understand the concept of 1-10.
Sandpaper Numerals to help children write numerals and associate the numeral with its name.
Using Number Rods and Spindle Box to help children visualize fixed quantities, encourage one-to-one number correspondence identification, and practice working with loose amounts under 10.

Practical Life

At Nursery 1, a wider variety of practical life exercises are introduced to the children to refine their fine motor skills, mainly their pincer grip, to prepare them for writing.
Numeracy concepts such as sorting by size, colour, shapes, and proportioning are integrated into practical exercises to provide opportunities to strengthen children’s hands and eye-hand coordination.
Children practice freedom of choice within limits while selecting their activity of choice.

Sensorial

Building on their prior knowledge, Nursery 1 children explore the relationships between different sensorial materials, such as Knobbed and Knobless Cylinders.
Children can discriminate between 2D and 3D shapes using the Geometric Cabinet and the Geometric Solids respectively, and recognize and name more colours and shapes.
By moving these materials around in the classroom, children also learn how to navigate spaces in a careful and controlled manner while carrying weighted items.

Cultural Studies

Children continue to touch on topics that they find relatable and familiar, such as Five Senses, Community Helpers and All About Singapore.
Children can explore these topics using hands-on materials while teachers facilitate and guide their learning.
Festival Weeks are also included to help children develop a deep appreciation and understanding of the different cultures and traditions that we have around us.

Aesthetics & Creativity

Children are introduced to the elements of art in Nursery 1 through various experiences involving different mediums throughout the year.
Mark-making (creating different patterns, lines, textures, and shapes) remains a key aspect of the children’s art experience to encourage creativity and exploration.
In Music and Movement, children are also introduced to simple musical elements such as Beat and Rhythm to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of music.

Physical Activities

Physical movement is crucial for our children to develop healthy bodies and minds. We provide daily physical activities both indoor and outdoor settings.
Private Playground facilities are available in all of our centres for our children.
Our teachers also conduct structured physical activities to engage children in mastering specific locomotor and manipulative skills such as running, jumping, picking up and throwing objects.

Mandarin

Mandarin is conducted on a daily basis. Our Mandarin teachers are native speakers that immerse the children in the language and through relevant contexts such as Fruits, Vegetables and Places in Singapore.
They also create innovative activities for the children to learn Mandarin through hands-on activities and dramatic play.
Nursery 1 Children are also introduced to the basic strokes in Mandarin characters and practice mastering the strokes through tracing and writing activities.

In Singapore, most children attend Nursery school at age 3, starting at Nursery 1 then progressing to Nursery 2.
At Nursery 1, Brighton Montessori focuses on helping children master foundational skills, develop and enhance fine-motor skills in preparation for writing, and gain a strong sense of ownership and responsibility over their own learning through freedom of choice within limits.

At Brighton Montessori, we cover the five Montessori Subjects: Practical Life Skills, Sensorial Exercises, Language, Mathematics, and Culture Studies through an emphasis on learning through hands-on activities. Our centres are also purposefully structured to create an environment where our students are motivated to explore, interact and learn independently.
The Montessori approach focuses more on individualized learning for our students, which provides them with more freedom to learn at their own pace and cultivate their interests. Learn more about our approach here.
As toddlers are full of energy and curiosity, they require more attention and guidance to ensure they progress to meet their learning goals. At Brighton Montessori, our low teacher-child ratio in the Nursery 1 class of 1 teacher to 8 students allows our teachers to provide a higher level of attention to each student to facilitate their personal development and objectives.
